Dark Spots or Acne Scars? Understanding What Your Skin Is Showing You
· Shifah
Your breakout has gone, but the mark is still there. The good news is that understanding what your skin is showing you makes your next step much clearer.
Is it a flat patch of colour, a small dip or a raised area? We often call all of these acne scars, but the distinction matters. A routine for pigmentation and post-blemish marks focuses on different goals from care for structural scarring.
Let us make that difference easy to understand, then build a routine that brings brightening care, hydration and daily protection together.
Dark spots vs acne scars: pigmentation or acne scarring?
A flat dark mark left after a breakout is often post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, or PIH. Extra pigment remains after inflammation, so the spot can settle while the colour takes longer to fade.
An acne scar involves a change in the skin's structure. You might notice a dip, pit or raised area rather than colour alone. Pigmentation and scarring can also appear together.
If you are unsure what you are seeing, a GP or dermatologist can help you identify the concern.
What are you trying to improve?
Start with colour versus texture. For flat darker marks, a brightening-focused routine and daytime protection can support more even-looking tone over time. Indented or raised scars deserve a separate conversation about professional options.
Why do post-acne marks stay after the spot has gone?
Melanin is the pigment that gives skin its colour. Inflammation can trigger extra pigment production, leaving a darker-looking area where a breakout used to be.
Your next step is gentle, consistent care: cleanse comfortably, avoid picking and give brightening ingredients a clear place in your routine. Caring for skin while it settles is more useful than scrubbing the mark harder.
What if the mark is pink or red?
Post-breakout colour changes can also look pink or red. Understanding the colour and how your skin feels helps you choose appropriate support.
If redness persists, feels sore or comes with burning, simplify and ask for advice. Our SOS skincare guide explains when to pause new products and seek help.
Vitamin C serum for uneven skin tone: where Advance Clearing Serum fits
SHIFAH Advance Clearing Serum is designed for the appearance of uneven tone, dark spots, post-blemish marks and dullness. It combines several complementary roles in one serum step:
- THD vitamin C: brightening-focused care for dullness and uneven-looking tone.
- Niacinamide: supports the skin barrier and the appearance of uneven tone and texture.
- Bakuchiol: supports smoother-looking texture and the appearance of fine lines.
- Hyaluronic acid and polyglutamic acid: help attract and retain moisture.
- Peptides: complement the formula's skin-conditioning care.
Your skin can have several concerns at once. That is why our formula brings brightening-focused care together with hydration and texture support. Learn more about THD vitamin C and niacinamide’s benefits, or explore Advance Clearing Serum for full product details.
A skincare routine for pigmentation and post-blemish marks
Start with a comfortable cleanse. Our Hydrating Cleanser removes everyday build-up with moisture-focused ingredients including ceramides, glycerin and hyaluronic acid.
If you use Glow Toner Mist, apply on scheduled toner days and introduce gradually, following your packaging.
Apply a pea-sized amount of Advance Clearing Serum to clean, dry skin, avoiding the eye area. Begin one or two nights weekly if you are new to active skincare, following your current directions. Then add Glow Moisturiser for hydration, softness and comfort.
In the morning, finish with SPF50 Sunscreen Serum separately after moisturiser. Use the amount and reapplication directed on the packaging, with shade and protective clothing too.
For the complete order and amounts, read our guide to using vitamin C serum.
Sunscreen for pigmentation: why SPF belongs in your routine
Sun exposure can make pigmentation more noticeable. Daytime protection is an important partner to care for existing marks, giving your morning routine a clear finishing step.
Use your suitable sunscreen consistently and follow its directions. Keep it separate rather than mixing it into serum or moisturiser.
How long do post-acne dark marks last?
We recommend a 90-day check-in with consistent use as tolerated. Your skin, the cause of the mark and its depth all affect the timescale, and dark marks can take longer than three months.
Take a starting photo and compare monthly in similar lighting. Look for gradual progress in tone alongside how hydrated and comfortable your skin feels.
Patch test new products and pause if irritation develops. Get advice if symptoms are severe, persistent or worsening.

What if you have indented or raised acne scars?
If your breakouts are painful, deep or repeatedly leaving scars, seek support from a GP or dermatologist. You can also get in touch with us for help understanding where the SHIFAH routine fits alongside appropriate professional advice.
A brightening routine addresses the appearance of colour changes. Structural acne scars need a different assessment, and a GP or dermatologist can discuss suitable options.
